France: Wandering in Lyon / Villeurbanne

Here are some photos from wandering around Lyon and Villeurbanne, the suburb where I live.  It's not really a suburb per se, you don't notice when you leave Lyon for Villeurbanne except that the buildings are newer (it was built in the 60s).  It's not as nice as Lyon, so usually when we go out we head to Vieux Lyon or Hôtel de Ville, the trendier areas.

I'm about a 10 minute walk to CPE Lyon, on the other side of the Doua campus.  The campus is made up of several schools and universities, CPE is fairly small and occupies 2 buildings.  I'm about a 20 minute walk from Parc Tête d'Or, a largee park on the Rhône that even has an outdoor zoo. Interesting fact: my residence is down the street from a military cemetery.

One of the nicer streets in Villeurbanne.

My neighbourhood is kind of sketchy... this building around the corner is slated for demolition.

Apartment building near my residence - Santa and his elves seem to have found a solution to the no-chimney problem!

View out my window (you can't see the roof of the other residence building in this photo).

One of the most interesting things I've learned about Lyon is that this was were movies were invented, by the Lumière brothers in 1895.  Their house and factory where they made the first motion pictures have been converted into a museum and movie theatre, where they show only classic films.  Every year they have a classic film festival, and actors like Georges Depardieu and Clint Eastwood watch the screening side by side with ordinary Lyonnais - it's very low key.  I went to see a Frank Capra movie, Broadway Bill, made in 1934.  It was really quite something to take in a black and white in the factory where movies were invented!
